Peterborough's history dates back to around 3,700 BC, evident by the architecture on display in the streets and the finds on display in Peterborough's museums. Needless to say then that its attractions revolve around history, with the fine Norman Cathedral standing out as the centrepiece. It was here that King Henry VIII's first wife Catherine of Aragon was buried, as was Mary Queen of Scots until her body was moved to Westminster Abbey 25 years later.
After the impressive Cathedral, Peterborough's museums are well worth a visit on your escorted coach tour. The Flag Fen Bronze Age archaeological site is a must with its museum showcasing Britain's oldest wheel, as is the Peterborough Museum boasting a noteworthy display on marine dinosaurs.
- Cross Cathedral Square and stop to take in the 17th century Butter Cross or take a break from history to explore the stores in Queensgate Shopping Centre.
