Often perceived as a less glamorous region of France because of its proximity to England, booze-cruise reputation and cooler climate, the land's Northern region is still a great place for holidays in France. With rolling countryside, striking cliffs, meadows, sombre battlefields and canals, it's well worth a visit on any French holiday.
Stroll around the rejuvenated streets of Lille, recently voted 2004's European Capital of Culture, and enjoy its Grand Palace, historic centre and infectious Flemish ambience. Towards the coast, Boulogne with its Notre Dame Cathedral shouldn't be bypassed, while St. Omer is dubbed the 'Venice of Northern France' and brews a creditable beer.
