It is thought that the Flame will be carried by 8,000 torchbearers in the 2012 Torch Relay and on parts of the 70-day journey, the Torch will travel by horseback, bicycle, tram and steam train. Organisers of the event say that the Torch will go through 1,018 villages, towns and cities taking in as many sights as possible such as Snowdon, Stormont, Loch Ness and Stonehenge.
Every county in England and every local authority area in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales will host the flame from as far north as Lerwick to Jersey in the south. The Flame will be lit in Olympia, Greece in May 2012 and will then be flown by British Airways into the UK. The Torch Relay begins at Lands’ End on 19 May 2012 and will finish on 27 July 2012 for the lighting of the Cauldron at the Opening Ceremony in London.
