A poll compiled by Lonely Planet interviewed over 3,500 people and found that walking on Scotland’s wild beaches was considered as the most under-rated day out and this was closely followed by exploring UK cities and discovering the past along Dorset’s Jurassic Coast. Benidorm was chosen as the holiday destination that most people would not visit even if they were paid to on coach tours.

For a fabulous cultural experience, you would think that the opera in Italy or salsa dancing in Cuba would feature high in the wish list but many voted instead for escorted tours to Jamaica and listening to the sound of reggae on a beach in Negril. The beautiful sacred Mayan temples in Tikal, Guatemala was voted as the best place for a great historical experience beating the Taj Mahal in India and The Pyramids in Egypt.

The survey just goes to show that typical British day trips by coach do not necessarily mean trips to the seaside or to theme parks – many people simply love to explore their local surroundings instead. Also, the fact that many of those people surveyed chose the Mayan Temples for a great historical experience shows what can be discovered if you venture away from the usual tourist sites.
