Renowned architect, Lord Foster, believes that it is possible to build an airport on the Hoo Peninsula on the Isle of Grain which is approximately 55km from London but the Government are opposed to the idea even though they have ruled out the option of adding a third runway to London Heathrow which could help to ease congestion at the airport.
If plans are approved, the new airport will have four runways and will be able to handle up to 150m passengers a year – this is three times more than London Heathrow. The extravagant plans also include the possibility of a high speed rail link connected to the city of London allowing customers to get to the heart of the city within 30 minutes. If that wasn’t enough, the train station for the high-speed rail link will be built beneath the airport allowing for rail services to The Midlands, North of England, Suffolk and Essex thus creating one of the biggest train stations in the UK.
Lord Foster believes that this new airport will have its advantages creating lasting social, economic and environmental benefits as well as improving the lives of the 5m people who live beneath the Heathrow flight path. Unfortunately, it is thought that the construction of the new airport will be opposed by residents living in Kent who have already objected to the proposal for the airport in the Thames Estuary.
What do you think of plans to construct a new airport? Will it have a positive or negative impact?
