Almost 47% of Northerners chose to take their holidays in the UK this year ahead of people living in Wales (41%) and just 28% living in Greater London. The study showed that Londoners were more likely to travel abroad for their holidays this year (72%) compared to just 53% of Northerners.
The study, carried out by Survey and Marketing Services (SMS), focused on the holiday plans of UK residents for 2011 and 2012 and showed that Northerners value a work/life balance and will ensure that they save money and make time for a holiday.
It would appear that rising travel costs and the limited choice of flight destinations and airports, compared to those in the South, are the main reasons why Northerners are being priced out of the foreign holiday market. There are also changes to travel patterns with the traditional two week holiday being replaced by a selection of short breaks throughout the year. Many people are choosing to spread annual leave across the year and are opposed to the annual fortnightly getaway.
Coach holidays would be the perfect choice for those people with limited access to airports in the North. There are a wide variety of UK, European and worldwide destinations that can be visited on coach holidays with the bonus being that more often than not, everything is included in one great value price. Coach travel is also much kinder to the environment as opposed to holidaying by car, rail, air and sea.
