Anyone visiting Venice on European coach tours should be prepared to pay a tourist tax of €25 per person to visit the city. Mayors from the Veneto area of Italy have approved this accommodation tax which is expected to earn the city approx. €20m a year and this extra money will be spent on vital restoration works.
Although the Tourist Tax has been approved by the various mayors, it still must be voted through by the Venice Council but this is seen by many as a formality and the tax will come in on 1 July 2011. Anyone aged 10 years and over will be required to pay the Tourist Tax which works out at approx. €1 per person per night per star of hotel category up to a maximum of 5 nights. The Tourist Tax is expected to be cheaper during the low season (November to February) and non four and five star hotels on the mainland and smaller islands will be charged less.
