The majority of the flotilla will be rowed or pedalled and will include steamers, tugs, Dunkirk Little Ships and old Thames fire-fighting boats. ‘Herald Barges’ will divide the flotilla providing music, entertainment, fireworks and a whole range of pyrotechnics.
The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, plus other members of the Royal Family, will travel on a vessel adapted from an existing Thames Sailing Barge. At the rear of the boat will be a structure to resemble a ‘coach on water’ with a clear Perspex canopy added so that the crowds lining the riverbank of The Thames can catch a glimpse of The Queen. A trumpet fanfare will accompany the Royal Party and it is believed that the Queen will disembark at Tower Bridge to watch the flotilla salute her as it sails past.
Other events to mark this special occasion will begin on the first weekend of June 2012 and will include a service of Thanksgiving at St Pauls Cathedral. Special commemorative medals will also be issued to mark the anniversary, with recipients likely to be those who have shown outstanding service to the country. An extra bank holiday will also be created so that everyone can join in the celebrations whether they are in London itself or watching the broadcast with friends/family on TV at home.
Queen Elizabeth II ascended to the throne in February 1952 after the death of her father, King George VI. Aside from the current reigning Queen, Queen Victoria is the only previous British monarch to have reigned for 60 years. The Queen will reach the 60th Anniversary of her accession to the throne on 6th February 2012.
