The British Travel Awards quizzed around 20,000 people and found that many will need to cut costs in order to ‘live within their means’ in the current economic climate. Although there are some who despite the economic crisis will ‘holiday as usual’ in 2012 and of these, at least 62% are over 51 year olds who do not have a mortgage and do not have any dependents living at home.
The survey has shown that there was less interest in the most popular long haul destinations and cruise holiday options. This could be because both of these holiday options incur a higher spend. The traditional short haul summer beach holiday is still extremely popular especially among the under 50s. In order to make way for the annual holiday, the survey has shown that families are choosing to cut the amount they spend in the destination itself with many choosing to opt for that all-inclusive break where no extras are required – apart from a little cash for those holiday souvenirs!
Interestingly, the survey has shown that at least 86% of those interviewed said that the huge sporting event due to take place in London will have no impact on their holiday plans for 2012 with a further 8% saying that they would go on holiday to avoid the events altogether!
