Despite volcanic ash and economic doom & gloom, London Theatre shows have bucked the trend with fantastic performances at the box office during 2010. Strong ticket sales have led to record revenues and near-record attendances – even the snow couldn't affect the popularity of West End shows.
The Society of London Theatre (SOLT) has reported that total box office revenues have topped £500 million for the second year ever and was up 1.46% compared to the same period in 2009. Attendance figures at London Theatres has topped the 14 million mark for the second time but like all other industries, was affected by the poor weather towards the end of 2010. There were a record number of performances and continued success for Plays that saw audience figures grow by approx. 2%.
The huge range of superb productions in London’s West End has shown that a visit to the theatre is a must-do for large numbers of the public.
