Kung fu cabin crew

19/04/2011
A Hong Kong airline has gone to imaginative measures to keep drunk and unruly passengers under check - by making kung fu lessons compulsory for cabin crew.

According to the Sunday Morning Post, Hong Kong Airlines, which reports an average of three incidents a week concerning disorderly passengers, has invited all staff to have training in wing chun. This form of kung fu is considered ideal for aircraft, since its close-range combat makes it perfect for use in small, confined spaces.

The martial art has already come in handy for a female flight attendant who had to handle an unruly passenger on a flight from Beijing to Hong Kong.

Eva Chan, the carrier's deputy general manager of corporate communication, said: "Normally, a female cabin crew can't handle a fat guy, especially if he’s drunk, but because of the training, she can handle it quite easily."
