The survey was based on the following criteria: climate, security, local affordability of goods & services, quality of food, cost of flights & accommodation, tourist attractions and exchange rates with Lisbon coming out on top but Cape Town, Rio de Janeiro & Sydney came bottom in the ranks.

The results of the survey commissioned by Kelkoo & conducted by the Centre for Economics and Business Research have shown that holidaymakers love European city breaks with Lisbon coming out top, followed by Athens, Istanbul and Barcelona.

Based purely on value for money, Rio de Janeiro, Sydney and Cape Town were among the least affordable places to visit on city breaks. The survey also proved that holidaymakers tend to take coach breaks in those cities that are classed as being safe with many preferring to take city breaks in the safest hotspots of UK, European & Worldwide destinations.

City breaks to Hong Kong are considered the safest option as the destination has 4.3 policeman and only 12 crimes for every 1,000 people. Although Amsterdam is popular with city break travellers, the destination fares worst in terms of safety with 144 crimes and 2.3 police officers per 1000 people.

Although Lisbon may not be renowned for the romance of Paris or the glitz & glamour of New York, city breaks to the Portuguese capital certainly match the criteria for holidaymakers when considering city breaks as the European destination provides value for money, a sunny climate and is safe to visit.
