The report shows that host cities such as Cardiff, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Newcastle were benefiting from increased international interest but gave only visitor numbers for 2010. Manchester, which will be hosting the men and women’s Olympic football matches, attracted 811,000 visitors in 2010 making it the third most popular host city behind London and Edinburgh. Glasgow will also be hosting the football matches and attracted approx. 551,000 visitors in 2010, placing the city in the Top 5 for the UK.
The aim for VisitBritain is to prove that UK host cities will become credible tourist destinations during and after the Olympics and that it will not just be London that is showcased during the event. They want the Olympics to create a legacy for the UK for many, many years and not simply just for 2012 no matter what the visitor numbers end up being.
Earlier this year, inbound tour operators said that they had seen a 90% drop in bookings during the Games claiming that ‘normal’ visitors will stay away whilst the event is taking place. The European Tour Operators Association predicts that prices will fall closer to the event.
