The survey shows that almost 2.8 million people have decided not to fly abroad for their summer holidays this year as a direct result of the Iceland ash cloud causing disruption. Approx. 4.7 million people are undecided as to what they will do for their summer holidays whereas 2.4 million have chosen to spend their holidays in the UK.
Mintel has discovered through this research that 7% of the people surveyed are more likely to book a package holiday so they know their money is safe and that they will be looked after in the event of any disruption. 8% of the people interviewed have also decided to take out extra insurance. Mintel say that the travel industry had hoped that things would get back to some sort of normality after the Eyjafjallajokul volcano erupted but 2010 is proving to be anything but a ‘normal’ year. The ash cloud is still causing havoc in some areas of the world and there are also the airline strikes that are denting people’s confidence when it comes to their travel plans.
To avoid the possible disruption of future airline strikes or ash clouds, maybe you should consider coach holidays this summer? Not only has coach holidays been proved to be friendlier to the environment than air travel but they are also great value for money. Coach holidays do not restrict you to the destinations you visit either, so if you are looking for European coach holidays, and do not want to risk flying, you should opt for coach holidays instead.
