The F1 Grand Prix season 2011 got off to a thrilling start in Australia yesterday, with a drive-through penalty, disqualifications and last year’s world champion Sebastian Vettel starting as he finished in 2010 – with a dominant winning performance.
Vettel turned his pole position into the winner position, coming in 22 seconds ahead of McLaren Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton who finished second. Petrov from Renault team showed an impressive performance and secured himself a surprise third place on the podium. Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso missed the podium but still scooped 4th place ahead of Mark Webber.
The race wasn’t so lucky for Brit Jenson Button, whose race was ruined after passing Felipe Massa illegally and incurring a drive-through penalty. Sauber-Ferrari drivers Perez and Kobayashi were also unfortunate, coming in with a solid 7th and 8th but being disqualified after the race for falling foul of the rulebook.
