The latest City Costs Barometer from the Post Office has detected that Riga, the capital city of Latvia, is where holiday spending money will go the furthest. Stockholm was the most expensive in the Barometer with all items totalling £313.64, almost three times the cost of Riga!
Furthermore, out of the 19
city break destinations that were analysed, the top five consisted of places within Eastern Europe.
The strong UK pound is advantageous and makes over half the cities examined much cheaper to visit during 2011 compared to 2010, including
Rome (9.7 % cheaper) and Berlin (6 % cheaper).
The Barometer from the Post Office looked at several different items when analysing the cheapest cities such as costs for meals, drinks, accommodation, sightseeing, transport and other typical city break purchases.
For holidaymakers who want to stay in the UK,
Edinburgh is by far the best choice. The Scottish capital finished in the top half of the Barometer table (three places higher than
London) and with prices 14.5 % lower than the English capital. However, holidaymakers will find eating out, incredibly more expensive in
Edinburgh with meal costs being 25 % higher.
Ireland’s capital city,
Dublin, also features highly in the Barometer and it has been noted as one of the Euro zone’s best value cities for the second year running. “Dublin is a top ten choice again this year with price falls for every item surveyed,” said Post Office head of travel money Sarah Munro.
“In the past the Irish capital has been criticised for high hotel, meal and drink prices but this year’s Barometer findings make it a bargain break, with prices almost as low as in Eastern Europe.”
