A survey carried out by The Post Office has found that these days instead of students with itchy feet & no responsibilities wanting to explore the world before studying, it is their 50-something parents (referred to as 'Grey Gappers') who are more likely to take a Gap Year.

It would appear that the number of ‘Grey Gappers’ choosing to grab their backpack and set off on holiday adventures overseas has soared. Approx. one in four people of this age range has either been on a Gap Year or is planning to in the near future. They are trekking in Borneo, taking cruise holidays around the world, climbing The Himalayas or exploring Alaska – spending on average £41,000 on their trip.

The rising cost of going to University is deterring some students away from the idea of a Gap Year and instead going straight into further studying as soon as their exam results have been issued. Any student wanting to go to University in 2012 are expected to face an average debt of £56,000 on graduation compared with about £27,000 if they began their studies in September instead of taking a Gap Year. As a result of this possible debt, many do not want to spend money on a Gap Year therefore their parents are filling the void left by their children.

This research has found that popular destinations for coach holidays during a ‘Grey Gappers’ Gap Year are Australia, New Zealand, America, Singapore and Spain. The more adventurous are heading on escorted touring holidays to India, Vietnam or Hong Kong.
