Forking out for a piece of Royal history

19/05/2011
It’s not something that most people would do but Alexandra Sharpe from Cumbria spent £500 in an auction for a slice of William and Kate’s Wedding Cake!

She found the eight-tier Wedding Cake (edible for 6 months) on eBay after Prince William asked for it to be sold on the auction site to raise funds for his charity Centrepoint. Despite trying to save money to make repairs to her house, Alexandra could not resist entering into an online bidding war for a piece of Royal history – she already has a piece of Princess Anne’s wedding cake in her possession.

The Wedding Cake for William and Kate is worth £3,500 and was created by the Welsh National Culinary Team with the Prince’s coat of arms displayed. It took over 3 hours to bake and was one of three cakes used for the ceremony on 29th April 2011. Leicestershire baker, Fiona Cairns, baked the main one, while McVities made a chocolate biscuit cake – a childhood favourite for the Prince!

Has the continued talk of the Royal Wedding persuaded you to visit London to see its Royal connections? If so, there is a whole range of London city breaks and London theatre breaks to consider, just give us a call on 0845 956 9686 to find out more.
