Discovery of new pyramids boosts Egypt tourism

28/05/2011
News programmes have been filled to the brim with stories about the civil unrest taking place in Egypt so the discovery of new pyramids will come as a welcome boost to tourism in the country.

Through the power of infra-red technology, Archaeologists have discovered evidence of 17 underground pyramids, more than 1000 undiscovered tombs and 3000 settlements. This news will be welcomed with open arms as the country has experienced a slump in tourist numbers, dropping by 46% in the first quarter due to the current civil unrest.

US Egyptologist, Sarah Parcak, has spent a year in Egypt gathering this information and has found a wealth of hidden treasures. The newly-discovered pyramids were covered by Nile silt and Dr Parcak believes there could be many more sites to discover, test excavations have already begun in Saqqara.

Viewed by many as an open-air museum, Egypt tours are the perfect excuse for archaeological enthusiasts to delve deeper into the country’s history and walk in the footsteps of Pharoahs.
