Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Comes to the West End!

18/06/2012
A stage production of Road Dahl's popular children's book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory will be opening in London's West End in 2013.

The show was allegedly set to open at the London Palladium at the start of 2013, but has now been put back to the Autumn according to sources.

Casting is underway for the production, which will be produced by Caro Newling and Hollywood film director Sam Mendes, who also produced the highly acclaimed Shrek The Musical. It is rumoured that the musical score will be penned by the team behind hit musical Hairspray.

The now famous story of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory revolves around Charlie Bucket, a boy who wins a trip to Willy Wonka's chocolate factory after discovering a golden ticket in a bar of chocolate.

If its success is anything like the stage production of another Roald Dahl book, Matilda, then the show should be a hit. Matilda The Musical, which is about a girl with special powers, is currently playing at the Cambridge Theare and has already scooped a record 7 Olivier Awards in April this year. The musical won more gongs at the prestigious theatre awards than any other show in history, beating Nicholas Nickleby, which won six prizes in 1980.
