It would appear that Amex clients bought fewer US Dollars this year compared to 2010 and this could be as a result of the increase in air passenger duty and poor exchange rates according to a study by American Express Global Foreign Exchange Services. The cost of airport tax for UK travellers when visiting the USA can be up to 400% more than if travelling in Europe.
Their Currency Index tracked the Top 25 currencies chosen by UK travellers and results show that European destinations such as Croatia rose in popularity this year, as did Scandinavia. Norway moved up 11 places on the Currency Index to settle in 20th position.
The most surprising outcome of this research was despite the political unrest in countries such as Egypt, Africa, The Middle East and Turkey, they were still popular with British Amex customers regarding currencies. Interestingly though, sales of Egyptian Pounds fell by a third in the last year despite the currency being a popular choice among some Brits. There has also been an increase in demand for the Euro, Croatian Kuna and Bulgarian Lev which some insiders say proves that Brits are choosing to take their holidays either in the UK or a lot closer to home than before.
