According to the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO), approximately 5,700 Brits were arrested overseas last year but this is 10% fewer than in 2009/10.
The new British Behaviour Abroad Report shows that the highest number of arrests took place in
Spain and
America but the most popular place for Brits to be arrested in Thailand. Arrests for drug offences appear to be the biggest problem for countries such as
South America and
The Caribbean where Brits are holidaying. There was also an increase in cases where Brits ended up being hospitalised at some point during their holiday with approx. 3,752 being admitted.
As a result of these findings, the FCO is launching an advertising campaign to urge Brits to steer clear of drug when overseas. The report has also shown that the Philippines was the country where Brits were most likely to need the assistance of the FCO, followed by Thailand and
Pakistan.
