‘Brummies’ were quick to defend their canal-lined city pointing out that probably none of the people who had taken part in the survey had actually visited the city. If they had they would have noticed that Birmingham has a lot to offer tourists from the world-famous Cadbury World chocolate factory to its man-made beach (nestled within Spaghetti Junction). The city can also boast more miles of canals than Venice and plenty of places for that romantic stroll including the Botanical and Winterbourne Gardens. Brummies are also proud that their city gave the world the Balti!
Many believe that Birmingham is suffering from an old reputation issue rather than a tourism one with University academic, David Lodge saying that the city had made itself a much more interesting and visitor-friendly destination.
