More than 1,100 people were interviewed for the survey carried out by the Metro Newspaper across Britain with many saying the main reason was tightening their purse-strings as well as the recent travel chaos brought on by ash clouds and travel firms going bust.

At least 57% of people try to avoid school holidays when making travel plans with 77% saying they got better value for money and 67% appreciating less crowds on the beach or in the resort.
