Named the Maiden City in the 17th Century due to its impenetrable
walls, Londonderry, or Derry as it's also known, holds the title of the
only completely walled city in the British Isles. It has been home to
people since at least 6 AD, and although it has witnessed hostile times
of late, the only thing likely to be frosty about Derry now is its
winter weather.
Divided by the River Foyle, Northern Ireland's second largest city
consists of two sectors, the Waterside to the east and the City Side
with its famed walls to the west. Increasingly modern Derry is a
thriving cultural and creative centre with a commendable music and
literature scene. Meander through the friendly streets of the City Side past museums, galleries and theatres, or head to Bogside to study the prominent, political murals that dominate much of the area.
- Stand on the double-decker Craigavon Bridge linking east to west and see the two political sides in the same view.
