The municipality of Leikanger (pronounced Lie-kang-a) on the Northern side of the Sognefjord is perhaps best known for its remarkable habitation of some 80,000 fruit trees. The orchards bear apples, pears and berries, but because of the region's mild climate boasting the mildest mean temperature in Norway, this also means that peaches, apricots and walnuts are also in here in their element.
Between them, Leikanger and the nearby village of Hermansverk only sport around 2000 residents, but there are still things to do here on your coach tour. Take in Leikanger's beautiful setting with its brightly coloured timber houses and steep mountains, lakes and waterfalls. Pay a visit to Leikanger's church that originally dates back to 1250, but which has since been rebuilt and restored. Here, gaze at it's 17th century interior or stroll out to the rectory garden, with its exotic trees that were planted in the 19th century.
