Anyway, enough about us, here’s a little more about the famous Silverstone Circuit and how it came to be the number one circuit in the UK.

Silverstone was built after World War II on a disused Royal Air Force base, this was because famous track Brooklands became damaged during the war. In 1950 the first ever Formula One Championship was introduced and the first British Grand Prix was staged. King George VI was in attendance as Alfa Romeo driver Giuseppe Farina became the first champion of the British Grand Prix.

The race stayed at Silverstone until 1955 when it began alternating with the Aintree circuit close to the horse racing course in Liverpool. The final race at Aintree took place in 1962 and the race track was decommissioned in 1964.

The Grand Prix was then moved to Brands Hatch Circuit in Kent and still alternated each year with Silverstone. The Brands Hatch circuit which was newly extended in 1960 offered banked corners and changes in elevation unlike the flat circuit at Silverstone. The final F1 Grand Prix race at Brands Hatch took place in 1986, the cars and drivers were getting faster and faster and the track was too small with little opportunity to expand.

Since 1987 all British Grand Prix races have taken place at Silverstone, with some true greats having driven the famous track including Ayrton Senna, Nico Rosberg’s father Keke Rosberg and many more. In 2008 it was announced that Donington Park had been awarded the contract to host the British Grand Prix from 2010-2020, however, Donington failed to secure the enough funding to host the race and the contract was cancelled in November 2009. Silverstone signed a 17 year deal to host the British Grand Prix until 2027 and a new circuit configuration was introduced in 2011.
