The most popular of Cumbria's destinations, Windermere is the largest and most heard of lake in the Lake District. Dotted year-round with windsurfers, water-skiiers, underwater swimmers and - up until recently when a 10mph speed limit was imposed - whizzing motor boats, the lake and its surroundings are a frequent hub of activity and a popular coach tour destination.
It's not just aquamarine stunts enthusiasts who are drawn to the lake however. Poet William Wordsworth knew the Lake well and often cruised across it by ferry, which is still the most gratifying way of reaching the attractions lining the lake, such as the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Steam railway, Bowness-on-Windermere and Ambleside. The spectacular setting makes for excellent rambling, with walks ranging from breezy afternoon strolls to slightly more lung-demanding treks. The bustling, vibrant village of Bowness-on-Windermere with its display of Victorian and Edwardian architecture is a must on your coach trip. Here enjoy panoramic views of the lake and fells or pay a trip to the World of Beatrix Potter in Bowness's centre to meet her well-known characters or simply take a hard earned rest in the themed tea room. The attractive village of Windermere is a stone's throw away, offering a distinct character.
