Located close to Munich, Lake Chiemsee is Bavaria's largest lake and is otherwise referred to as the 'Bavarian Sea'. Its deep blue water and mountain vistas draw tourists every year and it is incredibly popular with those who like to include recreation on the agenda. Water skiing, cycling, rambling and other outdoor activities are big here, as well as more effortless carriage rides and paddle steamer trips. Painters and writers have clutched this area close to their creative hearts and a tour here on your German holiday will prove why.
Tour Lake Chiemsee
The Lake boasts famous islands of which Herrenchiemsee is the most sizeable and renowned since it sports New Palace, another of King Ludwig II's fairytale creations. Built in 1878, the castle was designed to replicate the palace of all palaces at Versailles and even though it is unfinished it doesn't disappoint. In true King Ludwig style, the castle is liberally scattered with dragons, lizards and other exuberant decorations. Highlights include the great hall of mirrors and the dining room sporting the largest Meissen porcelain chandelier in the world. Boats to the maginificent castle and its extensive grounds depart from Prien and Gstadt all year round and operate from more towns during the summer.
- The lake's second island Frauenchiemsee houses a nunnery and can also be visited on a German tour.
