Lord Byron called Interlaken 'a dream' when he first set eyes upon it, and this is still true of Bernese Oberland's capital town today. Nestled (as its name suggests) between the lakes of Thun and Brienz and boasting an enviable location at the foot of the Eiger, Jungfrau and Monch mountain ensemble, Interlaken's stunning scenery is all glassy lakes and soaring peaks.
Tour Interlaken
Interlaken is in the top leagues of the skiing world with a mountain railway regularly transporting hoards of budding skiers and snowboarders to the Jungfrau Top Ski Region in the winter. In the summer Interlaken is just as inviting; visitors may glide effortlessly across the lakes on paddle steamers, saunter around the town and admire the town's beautiful architecture, then do it all again by horse-drawn carriage. When the Alpine sun goes down, Interlaken's alluring nightlife and eateries provide yet more enjoyment.
- Whatever time you visit Interlaken on a touring holiday, a trip to Jungfraujoch (the Top of Europe) is an absolute must. Board the Jungfraubahn to alight at the highest train station in Europe; once there, take in the views from the Sphinx viewpoint, investigate the Ice Palace, have a wander around the small museum, sip cocktails and shop for clocks or even send an email to your friends at home!
