The gateway to your tour to Switzerland, Geneva is the centrepiece of Lake Geneva (or Lac Leman as the French-speaking locals know it). Geneva's old centre specialises in antique shops with the new part boasting chic designer shops reminiscent of Bond Street, making shopping here a popular attraction, even if it is expensive. The centre is also compact with its financial significance and proximity to France reflected in its cosmopolitan air.
A lakeside promenade is inevitable on your Geneva tour - on a clear day you might just spot Mount Blanc in the distance and it's here you'll see the Jet d'Eau water fountain, Geneva's crowning glory. The jet is in action during early March and the summer months and reaches an incredible 140 meters high. Another highlight not to be missed on a Geneva tour is the incredible Flower Clock, a floral symbol of the Geneva watch industry. Situated on the edge of the Jardin Anglais, the clock boasts no less than 6,500 flowers in its dial alone and sports the largest second hand in the world!
- Check out St Peters Cathedral, the Romanesque parts of which date back to 1000 AD. The cathedral is famous for being the place where John Calvin gave some motivating sermons in the sixteenth century.
- Learn about Geneva's history in the interesting Maison Tavel museum, known as Geneva's oldest dwelling.
