A modestly sized University city yet known the world over for its academia associations connected with some of the best medieval buildings in England, Cambridge makes a fascinating place to visit on a coach tour. With the first of its historic colleges founded in 1284, it seems only logical that Cambridge's crowning glory is the University's King’s College Chapel, established by King Henry VII in 1441 as part of his vision to build a college to take graduates from Eton. An unparalled example of late medieval architecture, the magnificent chapel boasts a famed, intricately carved fan vaulted ceiling, a work-of-art organ and a foundation stone that was laid by the King himself.
A good number of Cambridge's colleges are now attractions in their own right, often incorporating landscaped gardens close to the River Cam. The Fitzwilliam Museum is a must on your coach trip, exhibiting masterpieces by greats from Leonardi Da Vinci to Constable as well as a remarkable interior which is worth a look in itself. Enjoy a portable lunch admidst the esteemed 16 hectares of the University's Botanical Garden, created in 1831 by the very professor that tutored Charles Darwin, and when you've tired of that, Cambridge's medieval churches, parks, bookshops and specialist museums will keep you occupied.
- For a relaxing afternoon and the chance to make like a scholar, opt for a picturesque punt along the river.
