As the second largest island in the Mediterranean with 1900 km of coastline incorporating glorious sandy beaches and countless rocky inlets, Sardinia has fast become a popular destination for Italian holidays. Long known as a favourite with celebrities and the super rich (everyone from the Blairs to Bill Gates have graced the waters and browsed the boutiques of luxurious hotspot Costa Smeralda), the island's plentiful charms can be enjoyed on a tour of Sardinia without needing a substantial bank balance.
Sardinia travel
Choose a Sardinia holiday by coach if you have a sense of adventure and if Roman ruins, craggy mountains, mysterious grottoes and sunbathing on out-of-this-world beaches appeal. If you want to steer clear of the inflated prices of Costa Smeralda on your Sardinia tour, charming town Alghero is the place to head, with its Catalonian influence, old city walls and defensive towers. Capital Cagliari in the South also offers interesting attractions, including the National Archaeological Museum and a handful of Roman Ruins.
- Combine a boat ride with sightseeing on an excursion to Neptune's Grotto at Capo Caccia. Once there, embark on a 45-minute tour of the impressive, dramatically lit cave.
