The undoubted centrepiece of this beautiful, ancient northwest city is Caernarfon Castle, the most impressive fortress to result from Edward I's castle building spree after conquering North Wales in 1283. Back then it was built to resist onslaught, but now more people than ever come to explore its mighty towers and admire its brilliant views.
A stroll around Caernarfon town will display a mix of colourful houses, modern streets and ancient stone steps halting mid-air down broken parts of the castle wall. Stand in Castle Square and imagine it as the olden sight of cock-fighting and bull-baiting it once was, or stop to appreciate the classical County Hall.
- At the highest point of the castle, look out over the harbour and see the boats shrunken to the size of pebbles.
