Aachen is situated among the Northern foothills of the Ardennes and is the most westerly town in Germany. Its hot springs were transformed into thermal baths by Charlemagne and it soon became the capital of the Frankish Empire. Otherwise known as the 'Spa of Kings' since royalty from all over Europe flocked here for its curing properties, visitors still travel to Germany to experience its warm springs, which are among the hottest in Europe.
Aachen also boasts some stunning architectural masterpieces including the impressive Gothic Cathedral (Germany's former coronation cathedral for over 600 years) and the Elisenbrunnen bathhouses. Its western location also makes it a good springboard for those wishing to visit neighbouring Belgium and the Netherlands during their German holiday.
- Leave enough time on your coach trip to visit Aachen's Couven Museum where Germany's first chocolate was reportedly made. The 18th century house also offers exquisite period design and original décor.
